A new book by Hanoch Gutfreund and Jürgen Renn examines David Bohm's hitherto unpublished notes, uncovered from a series of lectures given in Israel in 1957

Dialectical Materialism and Quantum Physics: The Unpublished 1957 Lectures of David Bohm in Israel, published by Oxford University Press, offers new insights into the philosophical background of the second quantum revolution.

The discussion places Bohm’s lecture notes in a wider historical, scientific, and philosophical context and traces his intellectual development from the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics to an alternative interpretation based on the notion of "hidden variables."

The work takes an original approach to natural philosophy, based on Hegel's philosophy. As the lecture notes strikingly illustrate, dialectical materialism played a fundamental role for the further development of Bohm’s understanding of quantum mechanics. Here Gutfreund and Renn show how Bohm placed the notions of the infinity of nature and the unity of opposites in the center of his natural philosophy.
