Patrick Roberts erwarb einen Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Archaeology and Anthropology, einen Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Archaeological Science und promovierte zum Dr. phil. in Archaeological Science an der Oxford University. Von 2016 bis 2022 war er Gruppenleiter und W2-Wissenschaftler in der Abteilung für Archäologie des Max-Planck-Instituts für Menschheitsgeschichte. Seit 2022 war er unabhängiger W2-Forschungsgruppenleiter der isoTropic Research Group am Max-Planck-Institut für Geoanthropologie und war leitender Wissenschaftler der Abteilung für Archäologie. Roberts trägt außerdem eine Honorarprofessur an der Australian National University und ist Gastprofessor an der University of the Philippines.
Als Direktor der Abteilung für Koevolution von Landnutzung und Urbanisierung (seit Januar 2025) engagiert sich Roberts für die Entwicklung und Anwendung multidisziplinärer Ansätze zur Untersuchung der langfristigen Beziehungen zwischen unserer Spezies und dem System Erde. Insbesondere konzentriert er sich auf die Entwicklung neuer Methoden und Datensätze, mit denen sich untersuchen lässt, wie städtische Dynamiken, Entwicklungen und Netzwerke (und ihre Alternativen) mit Landnutzungsänderungen und damit wiederum mit verschiedenen Teilen des Erdsystems über Raum und Zeit hinweg interagiert haben. Dazu gehört die Kombination modernster Ansätze aus den Bereichen Feld- und Laborarchäologie, Fernerkundung, Paläoökologie, Geschichte, computergestützte Archäologie und Landnutzungsmodellierung.
Roberts setzt sich dafür ein, dass seine Forschung einen Beitrag für die lokalen Interessengruppen in den Regionen leistet, in denen er tätig ist, und arbeitet eng mit indigenen Gemeinschaften zusammen. Für dieses Engagement wurde er 2023 mit dem Humanitarian Award der Veddah-Indigenengemeinschaft von Sri Lanka ausgezeichnet. Er sucht auch den Dialog mit politischen Entscheidungsträger:innen, ist Mitglied des iHOPE-Netzwerks und war Mitglied von UNESCO-Gremien, die sich mit der Ausweisung von Natur- und Kulturerbestätten befassen. Im Rahmen seines Ziels, seine Arbeit der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen, hat er das Buch Jungle: How Tropical Forests Shaped the World and Us geschrieben, das 2021 bei Penguin/Viking Random House erschienen ist.
