Island Legacies: Joint Conference from MPI GEA, University of Malta
The Island Legacies conference will be held in Malta on the 3-6thJune 2025, and has now just opened registration and launched a call for papers. The conference, with the full name of Island Legacies: Prehistoric Insular Ecosystems, Societies, and Climate Change in the Mediterranean, will bring together an international, multidisciplinary range of researchers concerned with unravelling the prehistory of Mediterranean Islands. This broad theme includes both the natural and human history of islands, with a special focus on how the two interacted to shape Mediterranean islands today. This landmark conference therefore presents a unique opportunity to share knowledge and build new scientific links at a time when Mediterranean islands face some of their greatest climate and biodiversity challenges.
Thanks to funding from the Max Planck Society and the University of Malta’s Research Innovation and Development Trust, we are able to offer a fantastic programme for very competitive registration fees, while offering limited bursaries to local and international students and junior researchers. For the early bird price of €125, delegates will be given a package that includes three days of conference with lunch and coffees included, the evening keynote with Prof. Cyprian Broodbank and ensuing wine reception on Day 1, the Gala Dinner on Day 3 (at the historic Villa Refalo of the Corinthia Palace), and the possibility of attending excursions on Day 4. The event will take place at the beautiful Valletta Campus of the University of Malta.

We welcome papers from archaeologists, palaeontologists, biologists and geneticists, climate and earth scientists and any other allied fields of research covering aspects of ancient ecosystems, human societies, landform and climate changes on Mediterranean islands. We hope you will consider attending and/or giving a paper. The deadline for the call for papers is 15 December 2024. We feel certain this conference will be a truly special occasion, with plenty of added value given the setting, and planned activities.
