Assessments of Kenya’s Urban Ecosystems- Past and Present (AKUEs-PP)

(iKOLOGiA ya KALE MiTAANi - Swahili term for Urban-Paleoecology)

This research project investigates long-term human-environment interactions within Kenya’s urban forest ecosystems, both in the highlands and coastal regions. The project focuses on both historical and modern times. Our goal is to retrieve, and archive sets of short sediments cores from urban wetlands and bogs which are rapidly disappearing due to climate change and anthropogenic impacts. Subsequently, we will analyse palaeoecological and paleoclimate data from the cores to reveal how urbanisation and climate shifts have altered these ecosystems over time.

Using palaeoecological and historical ecology methods, the study will offer critical insights into how cultural, technological, and policy dynamics have shaped the current state of the urban ecosystems, central highland montane forest, and coastal forests in Kenya. The coastal region offers a unique opportunity to understand how specific cultural and political factors have influenced ecosystems changes.
