Prof. Ricarda Winkelmann named Lead Author of Seventh Assessment Report of the IPCC

September 08, 2025

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has appointed 664 experts from 111 countries to produce the “Seventh Assessment Report” on the state of climate science. Amongst them is Prof. Ricarda Winkelmann, Founding Director and Head of the Department ‘Integrative Earth System Science’ at the Max Planck Institute of Geoanthropology.

The IPCC provides policymakers with scientific assessments on climate change, its implications and potential future risks, as well as mitigation and adaptation strategies.

The Seventh Assessment Report will be published in 2028 and 2029 and will comprise several thousand pages divided into three volumes. Professor Ricarda Winkelmann has been appointed as one of the lead authors for Working Group 1, which will report on “The Physical Science Basis”.

The authors of the new report were selected from a pool of 8,771 persons nominated by governments as IPCC observer organisations. “They ensure outstanding expertise across a range of disciplines”, said IPCC Chair Jim Skea upon announcement of the decision. “The appointment means that work on the report can now begin.” The first Lead Author meeting is scheduled for early December.
